Contemporary Splash Ink and Color Painting 现代泼彩

Chinese Splash ink and color painting, also known as “Po-Cai” is a unique painting technique that combines elements of traditional Chinese ink painting with modern abstract art. Although its history can be traced back to the Tang dynasty (618-907AD), it truly began to rise in the 20th century, influenced by Western modern art. Zhang Daqian, one of the greatest Chinese painter of the 20th century, is often credited as the pioneer of modern splash ink.

I started to create this kind of painting when I moved to San Francisco Bay Area and joined the ASACA painting group founded by Hou Beiren who is friend of Zhang Daqian, which is dedicated to splash ink and color painting creation. I love this painting method as much as Gongbi. I fully enjoy its freedom and improvisation, which balances my pursuit of perfection.
